Rules and rewards

Here are the rules we’ll expect all Challengers to abide by when taking on the Challenge – and the delicious rewards you can earn by hitting your fundraising targets!

Like many refugees, who seek out ways to earn extra money to help support themselves (for example by making and selling handicrafts), you too will be able to ‘earn’ extra ingredients to add to your meals.

To do that, you’ll need to work hard on your fundraising. If you hit the goals listed below, you’ll earn much-needed rewards to add to your rations, such as a spice or flavouring, a fresh vegetable of your choice, or even a welcome cup of tea. So the friends, families and colleagues who are willing to sponsor you will be playing a crucial role in helping you through Challenge week, as well as providing vital funds to support refugees and other vulnerable communities around the world.

Your rewards will be tracked on your fundraising hub alongside your donation total – so you’ll easily be able to keep track of the extras you’ve earned so far, and how much more sponsorship you need to unlock the next one.

Getting started:

  • Self-sponsor – sponsor yourself to earn a spice of your choice to use for the duration of the Ration Challenge (unlimited quantity of your chosen spice)
  • Spread the word – earn 1 teabag every time you ask five or more people via email for sponsorship, or do a social media post and tag five or more people
  • Raise £125 – to earn salt to use for the entire week (unlimited quantity)
  • Raise £250 – to earn one vegetable of your choice weighing up to 170g
  • Raise £400 – to earn 120g of protein to enjoy during the Challenge
  • Reach £600 – to earn a hot or cold drink (330ml)

Heroic fundraisers:

  • Make £850 – to earn one bonus item of your choice up to the value of £3. The item must be a single item (for example a chocolate bar) and cannot be a mix of many ingredients (for example a hamburger) or multiple items in a pack (for example a packet of biscuits).
  • Fundraise £1,500 – earn a special thank you gift made by refugee women from the Ration Challenge’s women’s business programme in Jordan.

When you create a team, you’ll each earn extra rewards.

1. Team of four or more – fruit (150g)

2. Fundraising event – milk (210ml)
Host a fundraising event with your team, such as a Ration Challenge dinner or trivia night, to each earn 210ml of milk.

3. Team video – sugar (50g)
Create a video with your teammates telling your friends and family why you’re taking the Challenge. Share it far and wide! Don’t forget to tag @concernworldwideUK on social media OR email us a copy at so we know you’ve earned your reward!

The rules

By taking on the Ration Challenge, you’ll need to adhere to the following rules. The Challenge works on an honesty policy, so it’s down to you – and your conscience – to see it through properly!

1. You’ll eat only the contents of the Ration Challenge pack (plus the additional rice and flour bought with the ‘coupons’) for the seven-day duration of the Challenge, unless you’ve ‘earned’ other ingredients by achieving your fundraising goals.

2. You’ll only drink water during the week, unless you’ve ‘earned’ tea, coffee or a 330ml drink.

3. You’ll commit to doing your best to raise a minimum of £350 by 30 June (if this sounds scary, don’t worry! Follow our fundraising tips and you’ll be there in no time).

4. The Ration Challenge begins with your first meal on Sunday 16 June and ends when you wake up on Sunday 23 June – not at midnight on the 22nd!

Challenger insights

“What I took away from the experience was that it was a huge awareness-raising activity for both myself and also for my friends and family who got to come on the journey with me.”

“Receiving the pack in the post had a huge impact on me. It really hit me how little a refugee receives. I shared a photo and straight away people started donating when they too saw how little it was.”
